Top 5: Ice Cream Shops

If Summer has an official flavor, that flavor is an ice cream. In June Summer arrives, the temperatures go higher, we want to jump into holiday mood, and dive in the Summer breeze as soon as June start.

The  ice cream shops start to be crowded and many of us become kids again. There are some to whom every season is a good time to indulge with an ice cream, to others the arrival of Summer, is also the arrival of the ice cream season. For both we suggest the best 5 ice cream shops in town to visit this Summer, and maybe continue through Fall.

Santini
Even for the more distracted ones, everyone knows already Santini.  Originally started in Cascais in 1949, already more than 60 years ago, Attilio Santini served the first scoop and was far to imagine that it would become the lisboners and Portuguese reference of the best ice cream. Many can’t go on holidays without grabbing some ice-cream boxes and go on vacation packed with this Summer fuel.
It became a tradition to many Lisboners to go for a Santini, during the weekends as soon as the first Summer sun heated or after a beach day. Hopefully for the lisboners, Santini opened in 2010 the first shop in Lisbon. Right in Lisbon’s heart, in Chiado, was the choice to pay back lisboner’s  love for their ice-cream.
The success was immediate, and it didn’t need any further presentation. Nowadays, Santini in Chiado is a must. You will notice it as soon as you see a big cue along Rua do Carmo and happy people around indulging in such treats.
The cue might be long, but it goes fast. In the end the wait will be worth and you will reserve more time to have your ice-cream.
Tip –  Go for the famous Santini Strawberry or try the month flavor.

Amorino
The passion for ice-creams was what lead the two childhood friends, Cristiano Sereni and Paolo Bennassi, to gather and in 2002 and found Amorino.
The goal was set: to create exacting standards of quality, consistency flavour and of course, pleasure. The result was a high quality ice cream, as natural as possible and without added artificial colours or flavourings, and using organic products.
Moved by the recognition of the original italian ice creams, Amorino conquered soon peoples’s heart and a legion of worldwide fans.
The secret for the success goes beyong the fame of the italian ice-cream, as Paolo Benassi says, “We insist on keeping a close eye on the production of our gelato to thus be able to guarantee the highest standard of quality to all our customers. In order to achieve this consistency, our products arrive at each shop ready to be served, this avoids the risk of product alteration and we can guarantee that our customers will enjoy the same experience regardless of where they go to buy it”.

Nanarella
Opened in 2013 and neighbor of Principe Real Nannarella’s success reached already all Lisbon.
The ice creams are privilege to use Portuguese ingredients, ans seasonal fruits, apart from tropical fruits or the cone cookie that comes from Italy.
Thus in Nanarella we get an ice-cream that combines the portuguese products and flavors with the knowledge and italian ice cream tradition. Nanarella is for the owners, an Italian couple, close to an ice cream laboratory, where they test and create new recipes, since they reject all the ice cream industry prepared products. The result is an ice cream consistent in flavor, texture and color.
This ice cream lab is an open space, so people can see the whole confection process. The flavors choice is wide and varies a lot. There are the classics such as chocolate, vanilla or strawberry, but also experimental and seasonal flavours such as the basil flower, apple, cinnamon, roasted apple, kiwi or watermelon.
Inside there are no sits or tables and the ice creams are served following the roman tradition: with a spatula, with no limit of flavor choices per coup or cone. Make sure you get a little bit of (almost) each to have a Summer packed with flavor.

O serviço e a bolacha dos cones merecem ainda um destaque extra.

Conchanata
Conchanata was founded in 1948 by the italian Quintílio and Alfo Tarlatinni, grandfather and father of the current owner, Michele Tarlattini. As the family generation leads the business to the next one, also Conchanata clients generation introduces its flavors to the next one. The place that used to be where some of our grandmothers brought our mothers, then the place that was an excuse to our mothers meet their beloved ones, and ultimately the place where the third generation meets the other two in any given day for a home made ice cream. The place is almost the same since decades, and so the ice cream. That guaranty of consistency is what keeps and renews the clients decade after decade.
All the ice creams are gluten free and the fruit ice sorbets, apart from coco are egg and lactose free.
Tip – The oficial name is Gelados Itália Conchanata, but the shop ex-libris is the Conchanata cup, if you ask Lisboners about Gelados Itália, no one will no. There go for a cream ice cream with strawberry coulis.
