Deli Delux – Avenida da Liberdade
Talk about multitasking: Deli Delux isn’t just a café but a gourmet grocer, a delicatessen shop, and a spot where locals gather for both a quick lunch and a long indulgent weekend brunch.
The company opened their first deli in Santa Apolónia by the Tagus River, where it quickly gained a reputation as an epicurean’s dream. Following its roaring success, it has now opened a second premises on Avenida da Liberdade that you’ll definitely want to slot into your weekly routine or weekend plans.
Think of the newly opened Deli Delux as a slice of Mediterranean culinary charm right on Avenida da Liberdade: a sleek, white-tiled food hall that’s basically a smaller and more charming version of the first Deli Delux with an exciting addition: a restaurant.
On the menu, devised by Sala de Corte’s Chef, Luís Gaspar, there are four tartars (salmon, tuna, beef and a ceviche); shrimp and spider-crab curry; baby octopus with potatoes, white beans and pickled peppers; and codfish with zucchini. And as owner, Rui Sanches, explains: “In the dishes, we use many of the products available in the grocery, so that people can have the chance to taste them before trying them for themselves at home.”
Indeed, half the fun of going there is trawling the shelves for goodies to take home: olive oil, foie gras, chocolates, exotic fruits, smoked salmon, stuffed sausages, cured hams, delicious Portuguese cheeses such as Serra and Azeitão, pots of spice rubs, bags of dried mushrooms and artisanal beef jerky.
The new space is already a favourite workday lunch spot, so if you don’t find a table you can always go for the Grab&Go option, featuring a lip-smacking range of salads, soups, natural juices and desserts.
If you do have more time, be sure to linger longer with the locals enjoying leisure time, over a pile of warm pancakes and freshly squeezed juice.
